Thoughts on Meats and Leather

In our class and Mrs. Durnin’s class we have been reading a book called Half Brother, written by Kenneth Oppel. It is about a chimp learning sign language as an experiment. On the Idea Hive site Mrs. Dunin and Mr. Fisher wrote some questions about animal testing and stuff. They had us choose one question and do some thinking about it. I chose to answer, “Do you feel guilty about eating animals or wearing leather goods? Why or why not?”

I do not feel guilty for eating animals, mostly because I do not think about my meat being animals while I eat it. But if I do think about it being an animal, I do feel a little guilty. I do not ever go hunting because I don’t think I could do it. I would feel way to bad for hurting or killing an animal! But I am not against hunting, quite a few of my friend go hunting and I don’t really care if they do; unless I see the fur or something from the animals. I also feel really bad for all those animals killed in animal testing. But also I’m not so much against animal testing. Animal testing does help the health of us humans.

I am against wearing leather goods and fur. I think that there are other things to wear, that do not involve killing animals. Plus they are expensive, so why wear expensive leathers and furs that took an animals life? There are plenty of other types of clothing that you can wear, that do not involve animals. But if I ever see my friends wearing animal fur or leather, I would not say anything because if they like it then that’s alright. Everyone has their own opinion.

But there are  people that are the opposite as me, who feel that eating animals is completely bad and we should not do it. I know some people that are vegetarians and will not eat meat or even watch other people eat meat. Meat gives us protein, so it’s a little harder to get protein if you are  a vegetarian. Vegetarians eat nuts, soy, beans, tofu, and dairy products to get protein. But I can see how some people wouldn’t want to hurt animals, they are so cute!

On a scale of one to ten, I am a 5 on this issue. I can eat meat but I do feel a little guilty at times. I sometimes wear fur mukluk’s, but that is all the animal skins I wear. I do feel really bad for wearing animal furs but I do not wear a lot. What are your thoughts about eating animals and wearing animal furs? Comment below.

Great post. I especially like how you understand and respect your friends who wear animal fur or leather. A lot of people think differently from us, and that’s ok as long as they aren’t hurting anyone.

I like eating meat, and I don’t see anything wrong with it. Animals eat other animals all the time; it’s not a right or wrong thing but just a choice you make.

Furs and leather? Well, as a guy, I don’t have a lot of fur options. 🙂 I have a few leather things (gloves, jackets), but I don’t think about the animal it comes from. I just enjoy the feel.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. It’s always important to think about this kind of stuff.

Great post Goog! I can not believe that you do not go hunting! I love it! I do not care about animal testing that much and I can eat any meat just like you. I do not know how people can be vegetarians! I think that is crazy! I also like how you really explained your opinion on eating animals and wearing animals skins.

    Your bestest friend,
    Syd

    Hi Joan,
I have the same opinion as you on eating animals and wearing furs. I don’t wear any animal furs however I do not think that it is a bad thing. The animal in which the fur was taken off of was probably being used for its meat as well so it wasn’t wasted entirely. I always eat meat but also don’t feel bad about it. I realize that I am eating a cow, but it doesn’t really bother me. I think that without hunting, that the animals would eventually grow too far in numbers and we wouldn’t be able to control them; there fore I think it is actually a good thing that people hunt!

I liked the way you stated your opinion and how you supported it with reasons. You did a good job explaining what we do in the Idea Hive. I also don’t really feel guilty about eating meat. I think it’s just part of the food chain for us to eat animals. It’s just something we need to do to survive. The video of the chimps first steps were very cute. Awesome post! In the book do you think Jennifer knows about the journal?

Thanks, I never thought about the food chain… But yeah I guess that is how it goes. I do think Jennifer will find out about the journal. Gossip like that doesn’t usually stay a secret.

    Joan
Hey there Joan I recently read your blog post and thought it was pretty interesting. Yes I do think it is bad to kill animals just for their fur. I can’t really say much about eating animals because I’m a really picky eater and don’t like meat that much. In fact my favourite meat is ham. Also I have never been hunting either so that makes us even. Noah P.S what are mukluk’s?

I also don’t think it is bad to eat animals because we need protein to survive and be healthy. I think its is alright to wear furs but only if the animal is used for something else. I didn’t even know leather came from animals. I am probably on a scale of 1 to 10 a 3 about this issue.

Hey, it is Tanner. I do feel bad about wearing leather and fur clothing. Also for the same reasons as you, because there are many other things you could wear that don’t involve killing animals. But I don’t feel bad about hunting or eating animals because that is the circle of life. As you said in your blog post, “everyone has their own opinion”. I like this quote because it is very true. Anyone can have their own opinion about this topic and none can change it. If you want to stop by my blog at http://tannmcar.wordpress.com/.
